As the Technology Lead for NXTBoard, I get to work with the boards
Boards come in all kinds of different shapes and sizes and often have different purposes, but the underlying function and everyday challenges that they face are the same. I have worked with boards with missions ranging from managing a city or county and providing accountability and transparency to a constituency, to managing a state-wide education system ensuring that the appropriate student outcomes are tracked, measured and evaluated, to ensuring non-profit boards clearly understand their goals and can run productive meetings. This experience gives me a large pool of real-world knowledge to draw from as I work with the citizens of Tullahoma to ensure we stay focused on what we are trying to achieve and that we are setting realistic goals for ourselves that do not set ourselves up for failure. It has also helped me to understand the value of holding ourselves accountable through open and honest transparency.
“Whether you are a Board of Mayor and Alderman or the Board of Directors for a small corporation, you are entrusted to act in the best interest of your stakeholders to whom you are at all times accountable.“
By getting to work with some of the nation’s leading board and policy governance experts and coaches, I am in a position where I am continually learning new theories and getting to not only see those in action but figure out ways to use technology to make the processes more efficient and easier to understand. Working with our governance team, I can see and understand first-hand what works, what doesn’t, and more importantly, why a process did or did not work. I fully understand the need for benchmarking progress towards goals, implementing a framework for holding the board itself accountable, providing reports to stakeholders who in this case are the citizens of Tullahoma, and also in evaluating individual performance and continually looking for feedback on how to improve. Whether you are a Board of Mayor and Alderman or the Board of Directors for a small corporation, you are entrusted to act in the best interest of your stakeholders to whom you are at all time accountable.
As part of my role, I am privileged to work with a very diverse global team of engineers from different backgrounds and cultures. My position has helped me to grow into a leader who understands the power of listening to the people around me, taking the time to understand their points of view and personal backgrounds. I pride myself on being the type of leader who is seen not just as someone who gives orders, but someone who the team trusts, sees as a mentor who genuinely cares about the future-successes of those around me, and as a servant leader who leads by example.
“…leadership requires ‘statesmanship’ – as opposed to just being a ‘politician’ – this means having the integrity and willingness to stand up for what is right…”
I believe that leadership as it relates to government and politics requires a focus on the long-term good of the constituency, above and ahead of any short-term personal gains. Good government leadership requires charisma and integrity, as well as the ability to assess a situation by listening to others and based on the evidence and data to make a decision based on what would be best for the most considerable number of people. Above all else, leadership requires ‘statesmanship’ – as opposed to just being a ‘politician’ – this means having the integrity and willingness to stand up for what is right, even if it means resigning a position in government or losing an election.
“Understanding technology, the role it plays and how to properly implement it can also help save the taxpayers money…”
Finally, my background in technology and my role as Technology Lead give me valuable insight into what is coming down the pipeline as we march into the future. Technology impacts each of our daily lives from the ability to access city services online, talking with businesses who are looking to migrate to our city, and using social media to connect with constituents and quickly disseminate valuable information. Understanding technology, the role it plays and how to properly implement it can also help save the taxpayers money by saving on equipment and by taking advantage of tools that make our local government offices and processes more efficient.
I want to put my background and experience in technology, board governance and servant leadership to work for the citizens of Tullahoma and am asking you to place your trust in me and vote Berry for Alderman.
